A citadel built more than 500 years ago stands in the middle of modern, bustling Herat.


“The Ranger sped toward the Iranian border on the smooth, asphalt, Iranian-built road. Electric towers followed the road from Herat and disappeared into the Iranian desert. Sand dunes piled against walls, street signs, and parked cars. When the wind gusted, the sand blowing against the Ranger sounded like shards of metal. A range of brown, bald mountains paralleled the road on one side, an abandoned refugee camp on the other.” [read newsletter]
