vertical-profile-400x505ICWA is thrilled to announce that recent Fellow Malia Politzer’s article ‘The 21st Century Gold Rush: How the Refugee Crisis is Changing the World Economy‘ has won both a National Magazine Award and and an award from the Overseas Press Club. Politizer was a ICWA Fellow from 2013-2015 based in Spain and wrote about the primary migration routes via Morocco and the Spanish enclaves in North Africa. When awarding her and co-author Emily Kassie’s article, the Overseas Press Club commented “the reporters charted fresh territory in a well-traversed international issue by digging deeply into those who have profited from the refugee crisis.” The National Magazine Award, also known as ‘the Ellies’, wrote “For ‘The 21st Century Gold Rush,’ the small Highline team used time-honored reporting techniques combined with digital storytelling tools to document the ways criminals and bureaucrats are profiting from the global refugee crisis.”
