The Panama Papers in Perspective

On Friday, May 20, with the sensational revelations from the Panama Papers still emerging, renowned expert and ICWA Trustee Krishen Mehta gave the keynote address at ICWA’s annual Spring meeting and member dinner. During his speech, Mr. Mehta explained how $30 trillion in illicit capital flows to secret jurisdictions keep poor countries mired in poverty and increase global insecurity for everyone.

Mr. Mehta had a 30 year career as a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers in their New York, London, and Tokyo offices. He is now an Adviser to the Tax Justice Network in London and a Senior Global Justice Fellow at Yale University, in addition to his service on the ICWA board. Mr. Mehta is widely consulted on illicit capital flows and appears in the acclaimed documentary, “The Price We Pay.”

The evening also featured guest speaker Will Fitzgibbon, who was a lead reporter on the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) Panama Papers project. A video about the Panama Papers, “Victims Offshore” was produced by ICIJ with support from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting. “Victims Offshore” was featured on PBS Newshour and has been watched nearly two million times.
