ICWA trustee Fabrice Houdart introduces the David Mixner LGBTQ+ Fellowship

Join us honoring David Mixner by supporting ICWA’s David Mixner LGBTQ+ Fellowship to celebrate his 75th birthday!

Sponsors: Fabrice Houdart, ICWA Trustee and Managing Director at Out Leadership; Jean-Pierre Comte, CEO for Barilla North America; Kristen Anderson, Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer, Barilla; Steven Guy; Terrence Meck; and Rob Smith.

The Institute of Current World Affairs advances American understanding of international cultures and affairs by sending outstanding young professionals abroad on two-year independent writing fellowships to study countries, regions and globally important issues. ICWA nurtures the kind of deep understanding future generations will need to ensure America’s role in the world is informed by wisdom, foresight and compassion. That is why we are developing the two-year David Mixner LGBTQ+ ICWA Fellowship. David is a global leader in politics and human rights with a focus on LGBTQ+ issues. We aim to fully fund this named fellowship in his honor to advance understanding of the challenges facing global LGBTQ+ rights, announcing it in celebration of his 75th birthday in August 2021.

Robbie Corey-Boulet (West Africa, 2014-2016) interviews subject during his fellowship

Recent ICWA fellow and journalist Robbie Corey-Boulet (West Africa, 2014-2016), divided his fellowship between Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon and Burkina Faso researching sexual orientation and gender identity in West Africa. On his return to the United States, Robbie and ICWA organized an advocacy event on Capitol Hill on the geopolitics of LGBT rights in partnership with the Center for Transatlantic Relations at Johns Hopkins SAIS and the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting. Featuring more than 20 activists, researchers and diplomats from five continents, the event offered guidance on US foreign policy engagement on the topic. Robbie is now a reporter for Agence France-Presse based in Ethiopia and recently published a book based on his fellowship experience, Love Falls on Us: A Story of American Ideas and African LGBT Lives.
