ICWA trustee and former fellow Bacete Bwogo led a troupe of South Sudanese musicians and dancers kicking off the institute’s centenary dinner with a rollocking performance in the Cosmos Club in Washington, DC on November 14.

He was joined by performers organized by Lina Ajack, president of the South Sudanese Community of DC-Maryland-Virginia.

A physician based in Britain, Bacete was an ICWA fellow from 1992 to 1995 examining primary health care systems in Cuba, Costa Rica, Kerala State in India and the Bronx in New York. His band, Nile Star Friends Forever, is based in Juba, the capital of his native South Sudan. He’s also working on plans for a music school with a mission of advancing peace and reconciliation.

South Sudan is suffering instability and violence since its independence a dozen years ago, exacerbated by the brutal civil war in Sudan to the north.
