Former ICWA fellow Shannon Sims (Brazil, 2012-2014) reports from Brazil on the feminist movement in samba for The New York Times. Female musicians have been creating all-women samba circles, pushing to remove sexist songs about gender-based violence from the mainstream repertoire, and creating change while staying true to the original intent of samba: through resistance.
