Former fellow Pramila Jayapal (India, 1994-1996) spoke to Rolling Stone in the wake of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen’s recent news conference on the Trump administration’s “zero-tolerance” immigration policy. A staunch pro-immigrant advocate, Congresswoman Jayapal expressed outrage at Nielsen’s remarks. “I’m dumbfounded that she would lie her way through that press conference,” she said, referring to the separation of children from their parents. “She made it sound like these kids are somehow in summer camp.” The interview also discussed Jayapal’s “heartbreaking” visit to a federal immigrant detention facility and upcoming plans for a nationwide protest.
