Justine van der Leun says that Eve Fairbanks “tells it straight, providing insight into how ordinary people build lives in the aftermath of political upheaval,” in a New York Times review of the former ICWA fellow’s new book.

Van der Leun continues, “Her curiosity seems boundless,” highlighting Fairbanks’s empathetic reporting, personal memories and musings about South Africa’s beautiful and complex tapestry.
