The first debate between the US presidential candidates Joe Biden and Donald Trump was widely criticized as chaotic, but the craziness only made the event more successful for showcasing their true characters, former ICWA fellow Eve Fairbanks (South Africa, 2009-2011) writes for the Washington Post.

“Both candidates revealed who they are and how they act, and what they think,” she writes. “President Trump posed a couple of fair questions to Joe Biden that Democrats should think about if Biden becomes president. But Biden was fantastic: Under adverse—at times deranged—circumstances, he managed both to convey his main messages and to play it by ear.”
