Leon Carl Brown (1928–2020) was a renowned historian of the modern Middle East and North Africa. As an ICWA fellow (1960–1962), he conducted his research in Sudan, Morocco and Tunisia. He went on to become a member of the Princeton University faculty from 1966 to 1993, and he served as chair of the Department of Near Eastern Studies and director of the interdisciplinary Program in Near Eastern Studies for many years. Carl also served as president of the Middle East Studies Association, sat on the board of governors of the Middle East Institute and was an ICWA trustee. He wrote, edited and translated numerous books, including The Tunisia of Ahmad Bey, Centerstage: American Diplomacy Since World War II and Consult Them in the Matter: A Nineteenth-Century Islamic Argument for Constitutional Government.
