Chenoa Egawa (1997-2000, Mexico) and her brother Keith Egawa have written and illustrated a children’s book about the earth’s environmental challenges to critical acclaim. The Whale Child is published by North Atlantic Books and distributed by Penguin Random House.

In the story, a young whale agrees to be turned into a boy by the water spirit so he can warn people of the dangers facing the world’s oceans because of human carelessness.

“Vivid illustrations juxtapose the beauty and scale of the natural world that the children explore. . . . This necessary read decolonizes the Western construction of climate change.”
