Israeli officials observing the aftermath of America’s withdrawal from Afghanistan remember events in Lebanon in the 1980s and 1990s, former fellow Neri Zilber (Israel, 2011-2013) writes for Newslines Magazine. They were part of another 20-year war that ended unhappily.

“Israel left Lebanon with its tail between its legs,” Brig. Gen. Eli Amitai, one of the last Israeli commanders in southern Lebanon, told him. “This wasn’t a withdrawal—it was a house of cards, like dominoes falling.”
