Former fellow and former ICWA executive director Steve Butler (Northeast Asia, 1983-1986) was quoted in a The New York Times Magazine feature about how the journalist Gauri Lankesh became a casualty of India’s increasingly intolerant politics: “There seems to be a license that people feel to beat up or attack journalists in India.”
Butler is currently the Asia Program Coordinator at the Committee to Protect Journalists.
