New York police are accused of routinely exploiting legislation dubbed the “walking while trans” ban to target trans women of color, Karina Piser (France, 2017-2019) writes in The Nation. The law criminalizes “loitering for the purpose of engaging in a prostitution.” Activists are petitioning Albany to vote for a bill to repeal the ban.

“We see it play out in the same way each time,” the activist Saye Joseph told Karina. “When trans black and Latina women are hanging out late at night, if they’re dressed promiscuously, it’s enough for police to stop them. That alone should be angering communities and public officials.”
