An Islamic State affiliate killed more than 70 soldiers during an attack on a military camp on Niger’s border with Mali on December 10. It was the deadliest such assault in the country’s history.

Speaking in a Q&A about the escalation in violence on the International Crisis Group’s website, former ICWA fellow Hannah Armstrong (North Africa, 2012-2014) said the anger is rooted in decades-old local grievances.
