Usually deterred by busloads of foreign tourists, Austrians are now taking the opportunity provided by coronavirus lockdowns to rediscover their scenic Alpine town of Hallstatt, ICWA fellow Emily Schultheis (Germany, 2019-2021) writes for Politico Europe. The world-famous gem hasn’t suffered an expected economic crash from the pandemic and is relishing a more reasonable number of visitors instead.

“Many Austrians are saying, ‘Now I have the time, now I have the chance, now there aren’t so many people—I’ll come as an Austrian and go on vacation in Austria,’” the regional tourism head told Emily.
